Another invite to present on EVs!

I received a phone call out of the blue last week about giving a 10 minute presentation on electric cars.  I was so surprised that I honestly missed the rest of the thread of the conversation – the caller promised to send me details of the event in an email.  I said I would have a look and get back to her shortly.

I am a bit of an introvert and sometimes struggle with interacting with groups of strangers, so I wasn’t sure if I wanted to accept.  I’ve had numerous opportunities over the years to present on different topics through university and particularly in my previous job – I gave presentations to senior management fairly frequently and also to the executive team, but something is different about presenting to the general public.

The email with details arrived later that afternoon.  As I said earlier, I had actually missed what the name of the event was, so once I read the poster for the event, I realized I had heard about it a few weeks prior and had thought it sounded interesting.  The forum outline for speakers noted that they expected a few hundred people, but thankfully my slot would be grouped with two other people in a breakaway workshop in the afternoon.  A smaller group of people in a panel discussion I can manage!

So I accepted, and since then I’ve been working away at a presentation that I hope is interesting to the participants.  I am trying to provide a balance of general information on electric vehicles, but also intertwine my personal experiences and thoughts.  As with the last event I was at, I will post my presentation materials here on the blog after the event.

The rest of the forum looks great as well, and there will be workshops on numerous topics:

  • Green Jobs and the Economy
  • Rebuilding Local Self-Sufficient Food Systems [a personal interest of mine as well], with a presentation by my permaculture design certificate instructor, Grégoire Lamoureux of the Kootenay Permaculture Institute
  • Community Forestry and Watershed Conservation [the Harrop-Proctor Community Forest is an excellent example]
  • Community Based Transportation (I am in here along with community transit, carshare/rideshare, and biking)
  • Renewable Energy
  • Water Conservation Projects
  • Influencing Policy and Organizing for Environmental Change
  • Passive Housing [another personal interest!] Designs and Co-Housing Developments

The workshops will be in two batches of 4 each, so the only downside to presenting is that I will only be able to peek in on a few others.  However, there are two keynote speakers and the movie Cowspiracy to see 🙂

If you are in the Kootenays, I hope to see you out at “The World We Want:  This is What Sustainability Looks Like” forum in Castlegar, BC on Saturday, November 8th, from 10:30 am – 6:45 pm at the Brilliant Cultural Centre.  The poster with info is below and you can find the invite by clicking here.
