As mentioned in my last post, I was invited to attend the 2nd annual Nelson Green Home and Energy Show on October 15th. I had a great time at the show and really enjoyed answering the different questions that people had and showing them the Leaf in person.
Some typical questions, in no particular order:
- how much did your car cost?
- how far can you drive on one charge?
- how do you charge the car?
- how did you get it to Nelson?
The answers to these seemingly easy questions are actually a bit involved, so I will take the time to answer them each individually in future posts. (As an example, you can’t look at just the purchase price of the car, you really need to evaluate the total cost of the vehicle over some defined period, say 10 years, and include items such as maintenance and fuel costs – I will write more on this topic in the future!)
I brought a number of ‘info’ sheets with me to the show that were on display for people to read. I’ve added them to this post so you can view them in more detail. This table includes cost data for ‘fuel’ savings only at this point. I am comparing to the vehicle that I was driving originally, which was a Subaru Forester.
This infographic includes some basic comparison information between a typical internal combustion engine (ICE) sedan, a typical hybrid, and a typical EV.
I created this map to show the existing and currently planned Tesla Supercharger stations. I think it would be great for the communities in the western Kootenays to submit an expression of interest to Tesla for such a station. Current Tesla Model S owners tend to take road trips and I believe they would come to the Kootenays as tourists. As one person at the home show pointed out to me though, it would probably make more sense to place it in Castlegar.
Finally, this table attempts to clarify some of the confusion around the different types of charging. I’ll get into more detail in a future post.
When I was contemplating purchase of an EV myself, it took quite some time before I was able to even see one in person – I hope that by attending this show (and others in the future), I can shorten that process for other people and help them make the leap to EVs.

He is very passionate about the future of energy generation & usage. He prefers bikes & buses to cars, but acknowledges that Canadian cities have been developed primarily with cars in mind, so if we're going to drive, let's make them all EVs!
